A birthday charter bus trip to Anchorage

March 1st, 2007

For my friend Clara’s birthday last year, instead of picking the conventional Florida and New York destinations decided to hire a charter bus and ferried the whole brood including family members to Anchorage, Alaska to chill out! We thought she had lost it but boy did she make the right choice. We had fun from the moment we stepped into the charter bus. The Anchorage charter bus rental was spacious, elegant and well-organized with a DVD player that we didn’t get bored on the bus ride. I felt the need to say that even though the first thought that comes to mind when we think about Anchorage is COLD, it’s not really as frigid as I thought it was going to be.

In Anchorage, the charter bus dropped us off at a clever little place (Anchorage’s best kept secret) for lunch and a couple of drinks. This hidden gem  is called Moose’s Tooth pub and pizzeria. Oh, if you’re ever there, don’t order anything else unless you’ve tried their Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Pizza – it is to-die-for! The home-brewed beers were excellent as well.

On the second day of our trip, we asked to do some shopping and the charter bus driver suggested that we go to Downtown Saturday Market. There were more or less 300 or so booths for us to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over. They have everything in this unique market – from paintings to underwear, from food to carvings, from soap to CDs. But most importantly, there are those amazing food stalls – and you can even stand there, eat and watch live performances as well. How neat is that!

The place we stayed was called Dimond Center Hotel. Every night when the charter bus came to pick us up, we were always well rested and well-fed. Although Dimond Center Hotel is not your 5-star International Hotel, I personally give it two thumbs up for comfort and cleanliness. It sure was a great birthday that I will remember for years to come!
